On the kindness of strangers

October 8, 2014

These images would not have been possible without the kindness of strangers. It was late August. Unlike my usual half-prepared style, this time I had it (mostly) organized. I had the props lined up like the suits, gloves, stakes and drums. I knew the location. I had my hair and makeup done. But on my way out to Rockaway Beach the people that agreed to wear the suits cancelled. It didn't seem like a big deal because I assumed some of my friends out in Rockaway would join us - but no one could do it.

In the end Hanna and I drove to the location and I figured we would just have to trust someone would help us. Almost on cue Jarvis, this sweet guy who had just moved to Rockaway from St. Lucia bikes by us as we unload the car and agreed to help.

But that was just one suit - we had 2 more. We took some shots and then thought about the other suits. I had asked a surfer who kinda said yes but then paddled out. And then right on cue this amazing couple from St. Martinique walked by - totally down to put on the suits and help.

These pictures were possible because of their saying yes.

I am so grateful for the continual lesson, power and effect saying yes to help people we don't yet know to get things done. Together we are stronger.
